4. Cybersyn, Cyberstride, Cybernet

Project Cybersyn, Stafford Beer's grand vision for managing the Chilean economy, comprised of several key components.

Watch Stafford Beer explain Cybersyn's various components.

'Cyberstride', the first, was the nervous system of the project, collecting real-time data from factories to monitor production. The pulse of industry, it recorded, analyzed and relayed the vital signs of the economy.

The collected data journeyed through 'Cyberfilter', a program designed to sift through the noise, picking out significant changes or trends. This cybernetic gatekeeper ensured managers received only relevant information, filtering the cacophony into a harmonious melody.

Transmitting the data was 'Cybernet', the circulatory system of this cybernetic body. An innovative use of telex machines created a network that spanned the country, feeding the heart of Cybersyn - the 'Operations Room'. Here, human operators translated data into decisions.

And finally, the 'Operations Room'. A futuristic control center, swathed in bold colors and screens, designed to make sense of the data flow. Here, information became insight, decisions were made and actions initiated. Or so was the plan.

Together, these components comprised a system attempting to orchestrate an economy, a bold stride into a future that felt, for a moment, within reach.
